Josep Pons started in 12/13 his tenure as Musical Director of Gran Teatre del Liceu, position that was appointed in October 2010. This designation consolidated the close relation that Josep Pons has developed over the last years with the Gran Teatre del Liceu. During his period as Principal Guest Conductor Josep Pons conducted numerous productions including The Magic Flute, The Barber of Seville, Peter Grimes, Bluebeard’s Castle, Wozzeck, The Light House, The Human Voice, The Turn of the Screw, King Roger and the premieres of DQ (J. L. Turina) and Gaudi (A. Guinjoan), both available on DVD.
Pons began his musical training at the prestigious boys choir Escolania de Montserrat. The secular tradition and the intense study of polyphony and contemporary music at Montserrat marked Josep Pons’ musical and intellectual development.
Since 2003 and until the season 11/12, Josep Pons was Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España (OCNE), leading during this period a major artistic renovation. During Josep Pons tenure, the OCNE achieved high standards of quality and programing, which has been recognized unanimously by the audience and the critics. Previously, Josep Pon’s career involved other positions including Musical and Artistic Director of Teatre Lliure Chamber Orchestra (1985-1997) as well as Musical and Artistic Director of City of Granada Orchestra (1994-2004). Together with these two musical institutions Josep Pons developed an intense and fruitful collaboration with Harmonia Mundi France. This collaboration evolved in 20 albums that were praised by the international press for their contribution to update and refresh the interpretations of Spanish music and have been recognized by numerous prizes and awards including Diapason d’Or, CD Compact Award, CHOC Le Monde de la Musique, 10 Repertoire, Timbre de Platin, Télérama, Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros and Cannes Classical Awards.
Josep Pons is day after day in more demand as a guest conductor. He has appeared among others with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra , BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de Lyon, Orchestre du Capitol de Toulouse, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Haya Resident Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sao Paolo Symphony, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Götteborg Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de Belgique, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Orchestre dela Suisse Romande, Dresden Philharmonie, Gewandhaus of Leipzig, Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden.
Following to a very successful debut in August 2013, Josep Pons came back to the BBC Proms to conduct again the BBC Symphony Orchestra in July 2014. Pons is developing a very fruitful relation with the BBCSO that includes regular appearances at their Barbican series as well as recordings projects. As part if his tenure in Barcelona Josep Pons conducted in 2013/14 The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh by Rimski-Kórsakov and Wagner’s Die Walküre. In 2014/15 Josep Pons will conduct at the Gran Teatre del Liceu Sigfried and Cosi Fan Tutte, and Manuel de Falla’s Amor Brujo at Teatro Real. In addition he will collaborate with Orchestre de Paris, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Gewandhaus de Leipzig among others. Josep Pons will make his debut with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in December 2014 and on January 2015 he will make his first appearance together with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
In 1999, Josep Pons received the National Music Prize awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in recognition for his long and outstanding work on behalf of twentieth century music as well as for the quality of his interpretations and unique programming.
In addition to continuing these relationships, the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons will see Pons’ return to Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. He will also debut with the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Konzerthausorchester Berlin and Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI.

Josep Pons ha intrapreso l’attività di Direttore Musicale del Gran Teatre del Liceu di Barcellona nel 2012, consolidando un rapporto di lunga collaborazione con il teatro, dove negli anni ha diretto in qualità di Direttore Ospite Principale.
Il Flauto Magico, II Barbiere di Siviglia, The Light House, La Voix Humaine, The Turn of the Screw, Orfeo, Pepita Jiménez, Atlántida, La Vida Breve, Oedipus Rex e Peter Grimes. Recentemente ha diretto Siegfried e Cosi fan tutte.
Pons è sempre più richiesto come direttore ospite e tra le numerose collaborazioni figurano la Philharmonique de Radio France, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, BBC Symphony, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre National de Lyon, Goteborgs Symfoniker, Tokyo Philharmonic, Dresden Philharmonie, Orchestre de Paris, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lyon, Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse e Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.
Ha sviluppato numerose collaborazioni con le orchestre della BBC partecipando ai Proms e tenendo concerti al Barbican Centre. Ha recentemente diretto l’orchestra del Gewandhaus di Lipsia, la Scottish Chamber Orchestra e la City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
Dopo gli studi nella prestigiosa Escolania de Montserrat, è stato Direttore dell’Orquesta de Cambra Teatre Lliure, dell’Orquesta Ciudad de Granada e dal 2003 dell’Orquesta Nacional de España dal 2003, con la quale ha intrapreso un lavoro di profondo rinnovamento, rendendola una delle compagini più apprezzate nel panorama europeo. Oltre alle registrazioni per Deutsche Grammophon, ha sviluppato un’intensa collaborazione con Harmonia Mundi France che ha portato alla registrazione di venti album, molti dei quali premiati con importanti riconoscimenti discografici quali Diapason d’Or, Choc de la Musique, CD Compact Awards, Tèlèrama, Grand Prix du Disque e il Cannes Classical Awards.
In riconoscimento della sua ricca carriera musicale Josep Pons ha ricevuto nel 1999 il Music National Award dal Ministero della Cultura spagnola.
